Hazelnut: Cultivation, Uses, and Culinary Delights
Hello and welcome back!
In this edition we will feature a plant that I’m excited to be planting more of into the local landscape: American hazelnut
To start, enjoy this insightful video about the American Hazelnut shrub (Corylus americana), exploring its characteristics, habitat and ecological benefits.
Additionally, you can view a range map that shows its native habitats across North America.
Plant Profile: American Hazelnut
The American Hazelnut is a resilient shrub found in USDA zones 4-9. It thrives in moist, well-drained loamy soils and can grow in full sun or partial shade. Commonly found along forest edges and prairies, this shrub is an excellent choice for gardens and natural landscapes.
Harvesting Hazelnuts: A Personal Story
Recently, I was driving some backroads on the way to a friend’s property ready to forage some persimmons when I noticed a few American Hazelnut shrubs. Although the land was private and I couldn’t forage the experience reminded me of the importance of this species. The shrubs provide not only nuts for us, but also food and habitat for wildlife, showcasing the interconnectedness of our ecosystems.
Propagation News and Notes
I've faced challenges in seed propagation over the last two seasons, particularly with protecting air-pruned beds. I’ve essentially been putting out a buffet line for the local squirrel that lives in my backyard. We call him Sammy Squirrel and that dude/dudette is a rascal.
Despite setbacks, I remain determined to succeed with this important food species, as hazelnuts are among the fastest-producing oil crops native to my region of the world.
Delicious Recipes to Try

Hazelnut Pie Crust: A grain-free option that adds a delightful flavor to desserts: Hazelnut Pie Crust
Hazelnut Pesto: A unique twist on traditional pesto, perfect for pasta or sandwiches. Check out the recipe here: Hazelnut Pesto Recipe.
These recipes highlight the culinary versatility of hazelnuts and their potential role in sustainable food systems. As we explore native crops, it’s exciting to see how they can enhance our diets and support local ecosystems.
Wood Uses
In addition to its nut production, the wood of the American Hazelnut is valuable for traditional crafts, such as basket weaving and constructing wattle fences. This aspect adds a layer of utility to this versatile shrub, making it an all-around asset for both gardeners and craftspeople alike.
Cultivars Available for Purchase
Currently, I unaware of any specific American hazel cultivars, but I’m on the lookout for sources. If anyone has leads, please, feel free to share!

Keep the section on wood uses 👍🏼
I don’t find it all that interesting 👎🏼

This species is a powerhouse for the first tropic level of the food web. I'd consider adding some facts about that. Look up this plant on IL Wildflowers and check the Faunal Associations section.
Definitely interested in the wood uses 👍🏻
I would like to have multiple hazelnut trees around the property here! 🌰🤎
